I have a selection of rose patterns that I've gotten from my colleagues and from my great teacher, Grant Tomlinson. Very often you can find photos of lute roses online--there are a number of such photos in Grant Tomlinson's Historical Lute photo archive, which may be viewed and downloaded on the Lute Society of America website (access is for LSA members only.) You can use these photos to make your own rose patterns. Also, I believe that on the UK Lute Society's website you may buy rose patterns drawn by Paul Thompson. But just a google search of 'lute roses' will get you a lot of good examples.
Travishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18149684115949805572noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3858989391440501233.post-28419588866906188312021-02-12T07:04:07.907-08:002021-02-12T07:04:07.907-08:00Very nice work ! The small rose carving knife is ...Thank you Tamás!

The small rose carving knife is made with graver stock that I buy from Stewart-Macdonald (StewMac.) It's 2.5mm square, and about 150 mm long. I break these in half, and make 2 knives. I make the handles out of some hardwood I have on hand--pear or maple work fine. Then I carefully grind them on both sides to thin the blade out to a point, and then I work by hand with a coarse water stone to shape the cheeks. I work through coarse to very fine water stones, to put a very sharp edge on the knife. You need to experiment a lot with the shape of the blade, the thickness of the blade, the fullness of the cheeks, and so on, to get a knife that works well. But it's worth the effort!

TravisTravishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18149684115949805572noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3858989391440501233.post-46563883627394650052020-11-13T03:46:47.309-08:002020-11-13T03:46:47.309-08:00Hi Travis,
